Most people know that the iPod is one of the most popular, full-featured portable music players out there. The integration with the suite of other Apple music products, including iTunes, iTMS and AirPort Express, provides a solution few would argue is one of the best available. One of the lesser known features of the iPod is the ability to synchronize and read text notes. You'll need to enable the hard disk mode of the iPod, after which you can store text documents in a special Notes folder; but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Pod2Go will let you take the Notes feature to a whole new level.
Pod2Go links to a wide variety of information and news sources, and store them on your iPod in the Extras | Notes menu. The range of information you can access is pretty impressive. There's News, Weather, Movies, Stocks, Horoscopes, Lyrics and Directions. The News feature can retrieve news from any RSS source, which of course includes The Mac Observer. The Weather and Movies selections first ask for your ZIP Code, then allow you to select your area for a specific report.

There are also Text, Apps and Backup categories. Text is probably the least thrilling, allowing one to synchronize simple text notes. Apps provides some functionality that is redundant with iSync, such as Address Book and iCal synchronization, but also allows you to bring your Mail, Safari bookmarks and along with you. There's also a general Backup features, where you can take important files and create a backup that is stored on your iPod.
So bring more than music along with you when you take your iPod on the road, and give Pod2Go a try soon.

Mon Sep 20, 2004 5:06 pm Subject: Notes are important
I find it strange how people always seem to downplay the whole idea of notes. I need a lot of reference material in my work and being able to store and read notes while away from my desk is one of the main reasons I bought an HP Jornada PDA. That and being able to read e-books. A more manageable Notes feature for the iPod, like this one, is just one more plus for me as regards owning an iPod (which I don't yet).
