Analyst Sees Demand for G5 After Shortages
by , 6:00 PM EDT, August 26th, 2004
An analyst with Cross Research is saying that Apple will continue to see "pent-up demand" for Macs with G5, including next week's iMac G5 introduction, even after supply problems for the processor are solved by IBM. The comments come in a Reuters report on Apple's stock hitting an almost four-year high today. From the article:
"Tomorrow you've got HP doing their consumer electronics launch and the HP iPod launch, and next week there's the introduction of the new iMac," said Shannon Cross, an analyst at Cross Research.
Although Apple's introduction of the iMac had been delayed due to International Business Machines Corp.'s manufacturing problems with the G5 chip, Cross said Apple is well-positioned for growth.
"Even if they have issues with availability of chips in the near-term due to IBM, there's remarkable demand," she said. "Obviously, at some point the chip issue is going to be resolved and you'll be left with a good amount of pent-up demand."
There is more in the full article about Apple's recent stock movement. AAPL closed today at 34.66, up 1.61 (4.87%), on heavy volume of 17,070,320 shares trading hands.

We can't even get a G4 system over here in NZ at present - no imacs, no ibooks, no powerbooks - its insane!
I was down at my local Magnum-mac (New Zealand's largest Mac specialist) because I was supposed to be demo-ing a DP G5 1.8 3 weeks ago but they can't even get a second showroom model to free up a demo version.
The manager was saying that as of yesterday the only things he could sell me without a delay were 20 inch monitors, ipod minis (of all things!) and a base model eMac - he has had his worst month ever and the showroom was the busiest I have ever seen it!
Apparently the importer's warehouse is basically empty and the increased USA demand for laptops has wiped out the flow of product down-under.
As for G5s - forget it!

I lifted the lid and stuck my head inside to see what it look like and half of my face vanished then I blacked out.
Our three year old stuffed the family cat in the RDF Actuator Emulator and when we finally managed to get it outit was literally covered with widgets. It had an iPod for a head, and part of an Apple Cinema display lodged in its rectum. After about a half an hour the cat returned to normal. Happy ending, but never the less be careful with the thing.
Thu Aug 26, 2004 10:21 pm Subject: I Have the Only Working G5 in the World!
I must have an anti-RDF field near my dual 2 GHz G5, since it works perfectly and is quite snappy. I'm willing to take some of this anti-RDF field and send it to anyone who needs it.
Actually, I did have a lockup/fan issue when I first got the machine. After doing some research, I determined it was a defective ATI video board. Apple shipped out a new one and the problems went away.
Glad to see RC is still taking a handful of problems and pretending it defines the entire product line. Time to get a dictionary and look up reality...
RC that's ironic since a couple of months ago my PC started randomly freezing within a few minutes of booting. Mobo seems to have a problem. Haven't bothered to order a new mobo though. Just using my iBook more now. It sure is nice not having any viruses or spyware to worry about! Man I can't wait to get a G5! Maybe after next tax returns!
